The
content of my pictures varies. The essence of my black and
white images is mainly about my observations of what I call
the “minutia” of our world: things we see or experience
in everyday life, but sometimes miss. If context is meaning
then “context” references my emotional status.
My images are not predicated on but rather limited by my emotional
groundswells and experiences. I am like many artists making
art is simply: about a need to extricate or better delineate.
My black and white images hold fast to the influences that
major life events can create.
My
most recent work is a body of color images about displacement
and home. I began the project by
looking at the interior spaces
of three women in my life, who were constant figures in my childhood.
My initial intention was to study the interior spaces and assess
how the “minutia” in those spaces reflected that
person. All images were to be void of the human figure. As I
began to excavate the project I quickly realized that my grandmother,
who through an Alzheimer’s based disease, has now become
part of her “minutia”, her interior space. She was
until recently a vivacious woman with endless energy. Now each
day, as she remains hostage within her physical body, she literally
seems to melt into her interior matter. Her possessions, all
carefully selected and placed by her, bear almost no meaning
without her ability to tell the tales of collecting and selecting.
They are merely beautiful objects placed around and dusted by
prefect strangers, thereby becoming the detritus of a life long
gone, yet still here. These fragments speak about the fragility
and the ephemeral nature of our lives here on earth.
